Barley Stacks Wines Shiraz on The Adelaide Show Podcast

Most South Australians love Yorke Peninsula and Barley Stacks Wines Shiraz has just given us another reason to love it, with these two South Australian Drinks Of The Week.

These tasting notes for the Barley Stacks Wines 2008 and 2013 Shiraz, were recorded as part of The Adelaide Show Podcast episode 192.

It is worth noting the 2013 has won:

  • Bronze Medal winner in the 2014 Australian Small Winemakers Show.
  • Gold Medal winner in the 2015 Winestate Magazine’s World Shiraz Challenge.
  • Bronze medal/87 points James Halliday Wine Companion 2017.

What’s more, the 2008 blew us away and is currently available on the website for just $25 a bottle.

Barley Stacks Wines Shiraz tasting notes

From the outset, these wines were going to take this panel to new territory because none of them had ever tried wine from The Peninsulas region.

And it was a joyage of discovery.

Steve noted that just like the countryside on Yorke Peninsula, where he visited recently to run a tourism marketing workshop, this wine matched the scenery.

Just like the crops and the terrain, the 2008 Shiraz began with a foreground of fields of wine spread across the palate, leading to foothills of spice and pepper before being engorged by deep, rich clouds bursting with purple and black fruit. Steve suggests borrowing a local farmer’s tractor to traverse the broad expanse of mouth-filling experience this wine delivers.

Everybody concurred.

Later, as the 2013 was opened, it was instantly different with a more neatly furrowed palate built on a firm foundation of tannin that was primed to weather the storms of age. This will be a beauty as it heads towards its decade, which is why it has brought home the gongs.
