St Hugo 2010 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon

st-hugo-cab-sauv Photo by Steve DavisThis has long been a favourite of mine, ever since I got over my ‘Orlando’ phobia.

Both Brett and I had the same reservation with the Orlando label, most likely due to the budget, volume known as Jacob’s Creek.

That wine’s low price and ready availability means that it has most likely been associated with bad experiences of over indulgence in early adulthood.

In fact, I kinda hope many other people have that phobia so that there will always be some St Hugo in every bottle shop I visit!

This particular wine is Australia’s biggest selling red wine over $30.

Sam Kurtz, chief winemaker for St Hugo says, “There’s a huge difference in the climate from the north to the south in Coonawarra. It’s only a distance of 16 kilometres, but there’s a two-week difference in ripening between the north and the south.”

As we drank it, we got lots of blackberry, a hint of mint and lovely, classic, Coonawarra Cab Sauv tannins.
