These tasting notes for The Willows Vineyard 2013 Barossa Valley Shiraz were crafted during the making of episode 182 of The Adelaide Show podcast.

Former South Australian cricket great, Andrew Sincock OAM and his wife Yvonne, hosted us for the night and we even drank from official South Australian Cricket Association wine glasses.

This wine was considered the perfect match for this episode because cricket is all about the thwack of leather (ball) upon the willow (bat). We discuss that notion with Andrew, during the tasting.

The wine itself opens confidently and sees off the first waves of curiosity before settling in to build a long innings.

Steve said his first sip was liking wearing cricket shoes with small sprigs across a slightly spongy outfield, the wine just sunk into his palate.

Steve also noted some oak, early on, saying it was like he’d unzipped Andrew’s bat bag and stuck his nose in to inhale.

To which Nigel clarified, you touched your nose on his wood?

Steve commented that the way this is looking, four years on, he would expect quite a decent innings from this Shiraz.

Andrew said he admires people who can say that, put the bottle away and come back to it years later; he is not cut out for that!
