232 Ulithorne Unicus Tasting Notes

In episode 232 of The Adelaide Show, our SA Drink Of The Week was the 2014 Ulithorne Unicus.

What made it very fitting for our discussion about dumpster diving was the fact that this bottle had been rescued from a dumpster, itself!

Our guest, Nyx (a pseudonym we gave her to protect her identity), told how she shares bounty from her dives with other divers.

In this case, as a vegan, when she rescues meat she leaves it for some of her “carnivore” friends, and they return the favour with other products, such as this wine.

We must send apologies to the winery because we stumbled through variations of how to pronounce Ulithorne and Unicus.

However, even though we tripped over its name on our tongues, we firmly believe this wine should be on your tongue!

As a footnote, Unicus is Latin for “one of a kind”, unique, and, in this case, single vineyard.

The first thing Steve noticed about this wine was its firm, clean structure, much like the surprisingly cool cleanliness of dumpsters behind supermarkets.

And then, upon the palate, the wine opens with a rich provision of fruits and spice and even a little floral perfume around the edges.

Nyx noted how that resonated for her, adding that flowers are often found in dumpsters, so her home is often adorned with the delight that this wine brought to the senses.

Nigel noted how the tidy tannins cleaned the palate, much like the dumpster divers’ rule of leaving dumpster areas cleaner than how you found them.

We heartily recommend the 2014 Ulithorne Unicus, even if you have to pay for it!
