Things we loved

  • A really good international level performance from a local.

Things we would reconsider

  • Maybe ease up on the slightly gory videos before the knife-in- the-cup trick?

Another fantastic mentalism show by Adelaidian Matt Tarrant.

With a style and charm in character with the best magicians, Matt puts on a very slick and well produced entertaining show.

Inspired by René Lavand of the close up famous magician stable, Matt and his able assistant ‘Cat-Bus’ began from the get-go with drawing the audience into the show and some close up card magic.

In true René style he performed the trick slower and slower with an audience performer supplying half the cards and even at the slowest speed the nature of illusion wasn’t clear.

Soon followed an amusing trick involving a phone, the second time I had seen phones used as a prop this Fringe.

And then a shift into mentalism, an area where Matt really shined.

With great audience participation, his captivating work followed trick after trick with great demos of ‘mind reading’

Presentation was fast paced and very professional and the lighting was used to great effect

Matt finished with a variation of the knife in the cup trick and he pulls it off with fantastic drama and flair, the audience gasping each time Matt smashed his hand down on the bag.

Overall Matt’s performance was as good as any you’ll see around the world, he doesn’t go with the flashy fluffery but holds a calm and serious tone throughout the show.

Well done for another Adelaide boy.
