040 – Adelaide Schools and the Don

steve-colin-charlie-brett-school

This week the team goes back to school to rekindle memories of life in the great educational institutions of yore aka Adelaide schools.

It’s to honour the conference in Adelaide this week looking at the next wave of challenges facing school design and construction.

We hear about kiss chasey, long grass, bomb scares, playground near death experiences and crushes on teachers. Yep, just the usual stuff!

Chloe from Yelp gives us five great places to go to enjoy Winter better this year – all around Adelaide, the Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula.

Dr Dino Hodge returns for part two of the interview about his book, Don Dunstan: Intimacy and Liberty (a political biography). You can hear part one of our Don Dunstan biography interview in episode 39.

We also cover Adelaide’s water (it’s better than legend would have you believe), Peter Goers, and Peppa Pig – pick the odd one out!

Plus wine from Sir Richard Branson, music about the death of Dr George Duncan, and an Adelaide Visa Council that not only crosses borders, but crosses the floor of parliament. Did someone mention Martin Hamilton-Smith?

We also stumble across an actual Boring Conference which we’d like to bring Down Under.

Show notes

Intro: Our original theme song in full is here, Adelaidey-hoo.

South Australian Drink Of The Week: Virign Wines 2013 The Black Pig Shiraz, McLaren Vale. Tasting notes here.

Shout outs: Steve also ‘roasts’ the federal govt over reports that budget cuts to the ABC means Peppa Pig might be off the viewing menu – a quip-ridden NewsCorp article says, ‘ABC managing director Mark Scott told a Senate estimates hearing the corporation had contracts in place to continue Peppa Pig in the immediate future, things were muddier down the track.’ Charlie says well done to the morning tea troups about town raising breast cancer research via Cancer Council SA. Steve mentions the Boring Conference in London on May 31 – the fourth annual event – where people have talked about sneezing, toast, the sounds made by vending machines, the Shipping Forecast, barcodes, yellow lines, London shop fronts, the television programme Antiques Road Trip and the features of the Yamaha PSR-175 Portatune keyboard (the tip came from Tania Esposito, our Royal Adelaide Show chutney-making showcase).

Stories without notice: Colin brings up the Peter Goers gaffe. Ben Pike responded to comments about Adelaide’s water supply, reminding us that the 1s and 2s of Hahndorf residents get treated and then mixed back into the water supply for Adelaide – thank goodness they drink good beer up there.

Interview: Chloe Reschke-Maguire from Yelp brings us her monthly surfacing of the treasures of Adelaide and South Australia, as uncovered by Yelpers. This month the topic is Indoors Winter Fun. Here is a link to the places she talks about.

Part Two of the Dr Dino Hodge interview, author of Don Dunstan, Intimacy & Liberty (a political biography), published by Wakefield Press and available from Wakefield Press and available from most Adelaide bookshops, Wakefield Press in Kent Town and online at wakefieldpress.com.au.

Adelaide’s Yesterdays: Colin gets us to think back to our early school days in honour of the Schools Planning Conference in Adelaide this week. Such an important time in our lives, and so many memories that endure for the ABTNIA team, from the 1970s and 1980s.

Adelaide Visa Council: Before the Council this week:

Brett’s Musical Pilgrimage: Jimmy Meegan with The Ghost Of Adelaide.

Here is this week’s preview video:

SFX: Throughout the podcast we use free sfx from freesfx.co.uk for the harp, the visa stamp, the silent movie music, the radio signal sfx, the wine pouring and cork pulling sfx, and the swooshes around Siri.
