Maggies – PlanB – 043

plan bThe Musical Pilgrimage for Episode #43 of the podcast brought us a band who was originally around Adelaide in the 80’s, reforming in 2009 and have since been touring the world.

PlanB are touring China again this year and so I thought it was apt to include a song about a Beijing establishment of ill repute, Maggies. Have a listen and see if the lead vocalist sounds familiar!

Maggies is a bar of ill-repute in Beijing and is the latest film clip to be produced by the band. As with most of PlanB’s material, Maggies was written by Peter Flierl and he described the motivation behind it as “Sitting in a bar/pub, doing some people watching. Occasionally you’ll see women dancing by themselves for the pleasure (or just to ‘be in the moment’, to forget about stuff, or to just be melancholy). What’s their story, and do they care that people are watching them? MAGGIES is the name of a very popular late night bar quite near to the ‘diplomatic areas’ in Beijing which is frequented by a large contingent of prostitutes. Only visited once or twice (for a game of pool and to see what all the fuss was about) . The song is based on observations at the bar and embellishing on that. Chinese pros frequent the place in the early evening and then it was the Mongolian ‘ladies; that usually arrived in force around midnight. and caused friction/angst among the local girls”
