The Adelaide Show Podcast putting South Australian passion on centre stage

Got the Monkey Off my Back by Susan Lily 002

I’ve met Susan Lily around the Adelaide musical traps several times. Susan has been classified as a country artist, though I prefer to think of her as a little more contemporary.  Having said that, the country links are obvious.

Susan Lily is a pleasure to listen to; a great voice, simple but communicative lyrics and a contemporary country style that gets you tapping your feet.
The song we featured is called “Got the monkey off my back”. The thing that hit me the most when I first listened to the song was when the lap steel kicked in; it was instant cringe. I’m not a fan of the genre in general and so when I heard that I thought “well, ahhh, er, oh well, I said I’d give it a fair go so let’s hear it out”. Steve took me to task when I mentioned this and shared how he loved the genre because of it’s wordplay and witty, satirical writing style. I’d always thought of it as, well, just lame, but after hearing Steve’s argument I can appreciate it as a genre that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
As the song played on I became more enamoured with the song, and subsequent listens made me like it even more. It has a great rollicking train feel and is a happy, upbeat pleasure to listen to.

Great job, Susan, I apologise for my prejudice against the lap steel.
