Da Da Doo by The Germein Sisters 007

The Germein Sisters are Georgia – lead vocalist, pianist, guitarist and songwriter, Clara, on drums and guitar, and Ella on bass, electric cello and synthesizer. I first met this family at a Tom Jackson’s performance seminar as part of the Three Wise Monkeys sessions put on by MusicSA at Jive in Hindley Street. Tom is a performance development guy; the Germein Sisters were the first reviewed act and I was the second. They were warming up before I arrived and I listened to them play this song and thought… wow. Just wow.

While there I talked to the bands manager and mum, Sue – as well as being their real Mum, she’s kind of like a super “Soccer Mom” but with music. She loves to share and is a delight to talk to. Tim Germein, the girls’ father is a trumpet player who played with Gumbo Ya Ya, so there’s certainly some musical lineage in there.

Published media releases and reviews I’ve seen talk about sibling harmonies. This is a real thing, and in the Germein Sisters’ case it is very evident. Georgia herself is quite well known within the South Australian Singer/Songwriter set. Prior to the sisters as an entity, she established herself within SCALA as a singer songwriter and entered (and won) a lot of songwriting competitions.

Regarding the song itself, I thought Da Da Doo was an unapologetic pop song; very listenable, happy and boppy. Colin thought it was a bit calypso and it simply blew Steve’s socks off.
The Germein Sisters were the straw that broke this particular camel’s back and got me past the cynicism of hometown pride and made me believe that yes, Adelaide and South Australia has some serious world class talent.
