I’ve been meaning to play Daniel for a while after meeting up with him at a song competition to play at the Australian Open (eventually won by “Stomp the Orange”, who also played in the same heat).
To my ears, Daniel’s vocal styling sounds similar to Snow Patrol, and this song, “Change their story” could be described as an almost Celtic anthemic dirge. I say ‘almost’ because apart from the 3/4 time (waltz), the Celtic bit is mainly in the middle of the song. It starts off with a nice clean guitar with orchestral strings under it, devolves into some banjo rolls and a violin and and then swells with a mix of other instruments like a viola and a rock drum kit. But don’t let that description detract from the song itself – there’s no reason an artist should be constrained from creating a fusion of instruments if it says what they want to say. The lyrics are a plea to recognise that we can make a difference to people less fortunate. “If someone was cold would you warm them? If someone was starving would you give them, what they need?”. Daniel relies heavily on the chorus to push the message that we have the power to “Change their story”.
This is one of those songs that improves with each listen, and yeah, now the chorus is going around my head. Great work, Daniel!
