Highlights of episode 169 of The Adelaide Show podcast

Dan Drummond and Steve Davis at the South Australian Music Awards for The Adelaide Show Podcast

A double header on The Adelaide Show podcast this week, with writer, Ann Deslandes, joining us from Mexico City and most of our music industry joining us at the South Australian Music Awards.

We arranged a chat with Ann after she had a piece published on the SBS website, praising South Australia for its legacy of being progressive and wondering what damage the storms and electricity damage will have on this legacy.

We talked about:

  • Donald Trump and how Mexicans feel about him and his wall
  • How the power issue is unfortunate for letting in the anti-green energy lobby, when that wasn’t really the core issue.
  • We also discussed how the fast turnaround of topics on social media is going to make it hard for progressive moves to work, in the future

At the SA Music Awards, organised by Music SA, our musical curator, Dan Drummond, introduced us to heaps of talented bands.

  • A common theme was how music people work other jobs to make ends meet and most put money into a common kitty to cover band expenses
  • Another theme was how the sheer volume of music available today makes it hard for bands to get a foothold
  • Very positive, lots of energy, just need more venues to embrace live music by the up and coming acts

We did our usual wine tasting (Ballycroft) but also tried chocolate from Red Cacao. Andrew, I have got to tell you about ONE flavour combination.

Is it news?

Earth Shock In Mexico

Recorder February 1922

ADELAIDE, Wednesday. The seismograph-at the Adelaide Observatory recorded an earth quake shock at a distance of approximately : 6600 miles, which would be about 7 o’clock on Tuesday in Mexico. Probably this has some connection with the big shock reported by cable to have been felt in Mexico and other parts of Central America.

Adelaide Birds For Mexico

Chronicle March 1947

Sixteen parakeets left by Pan-American Airways on Wednesday for Mexico City. They arrived at Sydney by TAA plane from Adelaide on Monday. The birds are consigned to Mr. D. West, in Mexico City. They come from Mr. H. S. Sewell, of Adelaide. Instructions on the cage read: — Please take care of us and – give us our bird seed and water.; A 20-Ib. bag of bird seed is part of the consignment. It will take the birds four and a half days travelling to reach Mexico City. The cage is divided into six compartments, and has fixed drinking bowls. There are striped awnings on the front of the cage.

Bullfight sparks complaints

Advertiser September 1948

The Royal Adelaide Show and Horticultural Society moves into its second century with a little bit of controversy. Its 99th annual show on September 8, 9 and 10 is promising to feature a Mexican bullfight. Farmers have complained that having such a bullfight in the show detracts from the seriousness of their work. Furthermore such practices are un-Australian and they say that in their opinion such sport will not draw the crowds some on the committee are hoping for.
