These Spider Bill Wines tasting notes for the 2015 Pinot Noir and the 2015 Shiraz arose from these wines being dubbed the South Australian Drinks Of The Week during episode 147 of The Adelaide Show podcast.
Our guest in that episode, Ian Callahan of Bar 9 fame, was given these wines through a friend of a friend for his opinion and as it happens, they were delightful examples of cool climate wines.
Spider Bill Wines tasting notes – 2015 Pinot Noir
The first thing that struck Steve was the colour. Although this Pinot is as translucent as usual, the colour that is there ranges from strawberry to crimson.
Ian noted how, at first, the nose appears as really sweet but as soon as it crosses your palate it becomes really dry, only to have the sweetness return upon the finish.
Steve concurred, saying it is like a monster from a B-grade Hollywood movie that appears, then gets killed and then reappears again.
He then went on to note how the flavour profile was like a nice-tasting, strawberry medicine.
Nigel rounded off by reporting how surprised he was by the depth to the wine, which was not what he was expecting when he saw it first poured.
Spider Bill Wines tasting notes – 2015 Shiraz
The Spider Bill Wines Shiraz was also a surprising drop, announcing itself as a South Australian Shiraz but not as one of those ‘punch you in the face’ big styles from the Barossa or McLaren Vale.
As Nigel pointed out, this is very typical of Adelaide Hills Shiraz, more refined and less fruit forward, almost reserved.
Steve said this Shiraz is like the fine, white horses pulling a queen’s carriage; proud, perfect precision and always ready for presentation.
Ian summed it up by saying if you were going to offer someone a classic Shiraz, this would not be the choice. But if you were someone looking for a different Shiraz, this would be worth considering.
As Steve said, it is like a Pinot maker had made a Shiraz 😉
