Welcome to the Adelaide Fashion Festival Collection, a special recording of The Adelaide Show Podcast.
It will never be argued that Nigel and I are too sexy for the fashion industry. In fact, whether you turn to the left, or turn to the right, the last thing we are likely to bring to your mind is fa, fa, fa, fa ,fa, fa, fa, fa, fashion. And yet, even us two specimens of guys with minds elsewhere, have been influenced by the fashion industry. So tonight, at the beginning of the Adelaide Fashion Festival 2016, we have gathered some local designers to help us conceptualise their industry, interpret the trends, and hopefully not trip over ourselves on this catwalk of conversation. Dave Court is the designer behind Fools and Trolls AND the retailer behind Created Range, Rachelle Boyle is event manager of Fashion’s Future, a TAFE SA student showcase and Jana Fuss is one of the fashion coordinators of Fashion’s Future graduate of TAFE.
We discuss
- Can fashion ever be functional?
- What’s it like running a fashion label?
- The psychology of fashion and trends
- Does fashion arise from an evolutionary need to restrict competition in the search for a “mate”

Psychologist, Jennifer Baumgartner, raises some interesting topics on the intersection between psychology and fashion in a Psychology Today article, entitled, The Psychology Of Fashion. Moving deeper into Evolutionary Psychology, I found an article by Nikolas Lloyd, a British evolutionary psychologist and archaeologist, entitled, Why We Follow Fashion. I have one major theme to explore. |
