028 – Keith Conlon and Adelaidia

steve-davis-keith-conlon

We go deep into Adelaide history this week, aided by the new Adelaidia app and Mr Adelaide, Keith Conlon.

Keith shares a number of stories about our city’s past, including the mystery of the date palms at the parade grounds, the character of Matthew Flinders, and the quirk of Adelaide streets not crossing King William Street.

We also hear first hand from the aftermath of the mid-north bushfires where Brett spent a day volunteering to help one of the worst effected properties repair and rebuild.

Steve shares a lesson in public toilet etiquette too – sure to impact your next visit to such a place.

Cheese Please in Murray Bridge provides a smooth, beautiful, parmesan-style cheese to taste, hand in hand with a local wine from Willow Point winery just out of Murray Bridge.

Music from The Saucermen pays tribute to Johnny Cash.

And we have some Fringe recommendations along with a note from our travelling Colin.

Show notes

Intro: Our original theme song is here, Adelaidee Hoo. Note, throughout the podcast we also use free sfx from freesfx.co.uk for the harp, the visa stamp, the silent movie music, the radio signal sfx, and the swooshes around Siri.

South Australian Drink Of The Week: Willow Point 2011 Cabernet Merlot from White Sands near Murray Bridge. Tasting notes.

Shout outs: Steve sent cheerio to the Bunk Puppets, currently performing Swamp Juice at the Adelaide Fringe. It is an incredible shadow puppetry performance. He also mentioned a day of street improvised theatre in Hahndorf this Sunday. And he shared some public toilet etiquette – you’ll never shake dry the same way again!

Stories without notice: Brett reported on his volunteer day helping to clean up after the devastating bushfire in the mid-north. He had spent the day at Beetaloo.

Interviews: Wayne Austin from Cheese Please, a boutique, gourmet cheese producer, talks about the Belvedere cheese he sent us to sample with the Willow Point wine – both producers are based in Murray Bridge. Wayne also talks about his love of crystals in cheddar.

Adelaide Visa Council: Before the Council this week:

Listen to the podcast to hear the judgements.

Adelaide’s Yesterdays with Colin: Keith Conlon dominated the show with his fascinating stories about Elder Park, Matthew Flinders and the naming of streets in Adelaide. The stories came from the media preview and launch of the new Adelaidia app – worth downloading so you can explore Adelaide’s history.

Brett’s Musical Pilgrimage: The Saucermen with The Ghost Of Johnny Cash.

And for the history buffs, here is a bonus video from the Keith Conlon Adelaidia tour.
