284 – Steven Oliver in NAIDOC Week

284 Steven Oliver in NAIDOC Week

In this week’s episode of The Adelaide Show, we will honour NAIDOC Week, which runs from July 7-14 this year. The 2019 theme is Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future, and it acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy.

And just as there are many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities that make up the group known as the first people, so, too, this episode is made up of a number of different components.

Our feature guest is the former star of Black Comedy on ABC TV, Steven Oliver.

This week, the SA Drink Of The Week is from Hollick Wines in the Coonawarra, and we’re talked through the tasting by winemaker, Trent Nankivell.

And in the Musical Pilgrimage, we have a spoken word performance by Steven Oliver himself.

Running Sheet: Steven Oliver in NAIDOC Week

TIME SEGMENT
00:00:00 Intro

Instead of toasting our late patron, Queen Adelaide this week, in honour of NAIDOC Week, I’m going to share a thoughtful acknowledgement of Country used by artistic director Alirio Zavarce in the latest production by No Strings Attached Theatre Of Disability called I Forgot To Remember To Forget.

We all forget things.
Sometimes we forget to introduce ourselves. Hello I’m Alirio Zavarce, the Artistic Director of No Strings.
Sometimes we forget that we meet on Kaurna land. We forget their care of the land and their spiritual connection. And we forget their elders, past, present and future.

00:03:32 SA Drink Of The Week

2016 Hollick Ravenswood Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignong is the SA Drink Of The Week.

Hollick winemaker, Trent Nankivell, talks us through this iconic wine and the importance of place for Coonawarra winemakers, in particular.

00:15:45 Steven Oliver
Steven Oliver was in Adelaide recently for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. His show, Bigger And Blacker, was a 5-star performance that not only landed laughs but landed some very poignant insights into what it is to be Australian, to be an Aboriginal Australian, and to be a gay, Aboriginal Australian. We learn a lot about Steven and ourselves in this interview, including a glaring blindspot in our media culture that took Steven’s audiences by surprise and has left a lasting impression on many. Here’s my interview, recorded just after the cabaret festival.
00:54:35 Musical Pilgrimage
In the musical pilgrimage, we are going back to the 2015 NAIDOC Awards in which Steven Oliver took to the stage and presented this poem in a spoken word performance about identity, bloodlines, and what it means to identify as black in Australia. I’ll embed the video of his performance in the show notes.
