This is the third song of Courtney’s I’ve played. She, Ben Searcy, The Bearded Gypsy Band, Andy and Marta, Susan Lily, Kelly Beaumont, and all the others – are all immensely talented musicians and songwriters.
This one, “I got a man”, I first heard Courtney play at the Irish club. It was the first time she’d played it and I loved it immediately. So when it turned up on her new album I just had to include it. It’s got everything I like about a song; it’s catchy, toe-tapping, it has a story, and best of all, it’s not formula. I made the mistake of describing it to her as “That man-hater song” once. Courtney was quick to correct me that it’s not that at all. “This song is just about peoples increased confidence to approach each other the more they drink in any given situation. It’s about Dutch courage. I was inspired to write this after one particular night at a gig. There were a few men who started off behaving like gentlemen, and ended up trying to grope me after a night on the turps.”
