WOMEN’S SOCCER TO START IN ADELAIDE?

The Advertiser June 1925

After interest was shown in starting a women’s soccer league in Sydney, similar interest has now been shown in Adelaide. At a meeting last night it was agreed that an organising committee be formed to determine the level of support for women’s soccer. Miss Jane Allthorpe, a long time supporter of the game and a one time player in England has agreed to use her considerable expertise from playing amateur soccer in England to help raise the impression of the game for women in Adelaide.

“We have seen acceptance of women playing hockey here in Adelaide so I see no reason why women cannot also play soccer. Many men say the game is too physical for ladies however the rules limit the amount of physical contact. Many young women can easily demonstrate their running speed and ball control skills after playing with their brothers in the street when growing up. It is a pity that they cannot continue to develop those skills as part of a club.

CARNIVAL FAME SPREADS

The News July 1925

Echoes of the Charity Carnival on the Adelaide Oval on Saturday, June 20, in aid of hospitals, have reached the eastern States. The Charity Carnival was a varied and joyous thing and brought a record crowd and receipts. Hockey for men and for women, soccer, rugby, a game unknown to Adelaide, which amused the crowd immensely, physical displays; wrestling; Chinese residents inside dragons, a football Veterans game in which the sphere was bounced by a low-swooping aeroplane; and massed bands of several hundred performers– could you ask for more?

INTERNATIONAL SOCCER. ADELAIDE OVAL REFUSED.

The Register April 1925

Reference to the recent refusal of the South . Australian Football League to grant -the use of the Adelaide Oval for the soccer match between -England and Australia on May 16, was made at a meeting of the league on Monday evening.

The Chairman (Mr. A. J. McLachlan) This matter has been discussed before I am afraid there is no way out of it. Mr.W. Cope (Norwood) I move that the letter be received. Mr. A, McKelvie; (Port Adelaide)-] second , it, and suggest that.it be stated in reply that the previous decision of the league would be adhered to. The Chairman— I don’t think there is any need for that, but I think, out of courtesy, the secretary should inform them of the fact.

The secretary remarked that it was easier for the Victorian League to grant the use of the Melbourne Cricket Ground as that oval was seldom used, only one team being there, whereas the .Adelaide Oval was used -by; two teams. The motion .was carried.
