Radio 5MU Style on The Adelaide Show Podcast

This week, we go back to where the Adelaide Show really began, with Steve’s introduction to radio in Murray Bridge in the 1980s; a story we’ll call Radio 5MU Style.

It was a fateful Sunday morning in 1985 when I headed off to Murray Bridge for a 10am job interview with David Bean and Phil McEvoy. Little did I know I would be on air that afternoon for a trial and then back the following Saturday with my first radio job. During the next seven and a half years, I got to meet some talented, hard-working people and some larrikins as well, and about a dozen of them have gathered tonight in North Adelaide to reunite with old colleagues and share war stories of the great mistress, radio.

Suggested Tweet text: Hear how David Bean & Phil McEvoy gave birth to #Radio @11255MU in #MurrayBridge in the 80s.

We discuss

  • selling ads
  • radio mishaps
  • water skiing
  • outside broadcasts
  • very strange job interviews

Also appearing in the Radio 5MU Style episode

In the musical pilgrimage, we’ll hear Made Of Stars because tonight’s cast IS made of stars

The SA Drink Of The Week is … Shiraz from Willow Point Wines at White Sands near Murray Bridge

  1. I am the eldest grand daughter of David and Di and i wish i could have heard them on the radio, it would have been a hoot i bet! Heard many wonderful stories and i know it was a treasured time in their lives. Good on you for having a reunion!

    1. Hi Tamika, it was a complete eye opener for me, hearing David tell his story about the station purchase. I was there but I never knew at the time. Thanks for commenting. Steve

  2. I had one regret on the night when I omitted to mention my daughter Belinda who was our computer operator, who could hold the radio station to ransom!!!!!! So if anyone upset her, especially her Dad, The Bear, because the radio station made money by putting clients ads to air, and noone else could operate the damn computer ha ha.
Then when Belinda left to have her baby, my other daughter Amanda came to work at 5MU. Well that was another story!!!!!!!

  3. Then there was our youngest daughter Melissa. She used to have a part-time job cleaning Phil’s River Shack at Murrawong. Well, Mmmmm there were certain little items that she would find, but Melissa did put away from prying eyes!!!!! As you do when you are 14 years old. None the wiser, Phil kept Melissa as his favourite little house cleaner, because she really did a good job. Thank you Phil. Melissa has fond memories of how you helped her through some difficult times as a teenager.
