01:23:09 Thought For The Week

There has been much volutary work helping people recover from teh bushfires. That is altruism, and that’s what Jordie is exploring tonight.

The team from Sunday Assembly Adelaide share a thought or reflection each week to help us wonder more.

  1. Thank you for this tribute to Vaughan Harvey. Vaughan gave me my first job in radio and first job straight from leaving school. Determined to get into radio I contacted Paul Thompson a few months after he had joined 5KA and launched Constant Music. In turn, Paul introduced me to Vaughan for a production job. In March 1971 I started as ‘cassette boy’ transferring ads on reel-to-reel tapes from advertising agencies, production houses and those produced by Vaughan to cartridge. It was a great time, great opportunity and incredible experience for a young lad starting in the radio industry.

  2. Hi there.
I went through the Vaughan Harvey school of Radio and later worked with him in the 5AD newsroom.
I was the one who typed the story that led to the nickname SP Kesman. (pronounced S P Kez-man which later morphed into Kezzo) Roger Cardwell, David Heath and then news director Max Duggan were in on the gag and I would have felt bad about the ribbing if Vaughan hadn’t taken it so well. It was an Adler typewriter and for some reason the O just didn’t come out on the paper when I rushed the story together at the last minute. The story was actually about the Casino and that’s why Vaughan could be forgiven for thinking S.P. Kesman (not bookmaker was a valid position). I think I told Greg Meyer about the incident when I last saw him in Sydney.
Vaughan was a wonderful and generous man who trained me in radio and helped me get my first job at 5RM. He was always available with advice and practical help in furthering my career and was so good natured about the Kezzo nickname and other little jokes we had. The thing is I’d never stir someone I didn’t respect and admire, or someone I didn’t think could take it in their stride. And Vaughan had such a long stride because he truly was a giant in the industry. Vale John Vaughan Harvey. You will be missed.
    regards

    1. Hi Ray
By coincidence I transferred from 5KA to 5RM in mid-1972 to my first full-time on-air and programming position. I was there when Cec Woodland was Station Manager and probably to best radio boss I ever had.
      Cheers
      Lindsay

  3. I have the privilege of working with Vaughan for 7 years during 5AA’s Good Music era in the 1980’s. A consummate professional. Very sad to hear of his passing. RIP great mate.
